If you’re off-roading, getting stuck in the mud is a fact of life. If you’ve got the right winch and use it correctly you should be able to get yourself out with no problem and in almost no time. The key to this though is if you use your winch right. Follow a few of these tips to give your winch the most power and make sure you get out of any mud hole as quickly as possible.
First, always try to keep the winch cable in as straight as a line as possible. You won’t always have this luxury, but off-center or indirect recoveries are much less effective and you will have to stop constantly to respool the winch when the cable starts bunching at one end. Pulling with the line straight uses the cable at its strongest and limits the amount of problems caused by uneven spooling.
If you’re doing a very heavy pull, especially if it’s short, snatch blocks can also help. They actually double the power of your winch by threading the cable around a second anchor point and back to the winch. This take s a lot of the weight off the main winch so it can handle a bigger load, but it also means that it will take twice as long to pull in your vehicle.

This can leave a ring that can ultimately kill the tree. The tree then can either fall on the trail or simply just become a blight in an otherwise beautiful landscape.
By following these tips you should be able to get the most out of your winch. For more tips and tricks on using your winch, visit the 12v Winch Guide.
