Considerations When Shopping For A 6 Man Tent

June 15, 2010

Owning a tent can help you be able to take a break from regular day life without breaking your budget.  There are many important aspects that you need to consider when looking for a cheap tent.

First, tents are described by how many people they sleep.  For example, one that is going to fit only one person would be called a one man tent, while those that sleep 4 people would be called a 4 man tent.  You need to determine how many will be sleeping in the tent and than look to see what each individual tent says it can sleep.  This number can be overstated so you may want to get at least one size bigger than it says.  The number doesn’t factor in how big you are or how many things you are bringing.  A 6 man tent is great for family camping. Of course, if you are going with a large groups of campers, you may want to get a cabin tent instead.  They have more than one room and can fit a lot of people.

But let’s say that you’re going to go with the 6 man camping tent. 6 man tents are a really ideal size for most people. You don’t want to have to invest in a new tent every time you go camping, and this size will accommodate you and your family, or just you and your spouse if you’re going on a romantic getaway. There’s no reason that you can’t have some extra space when you’re camping just the two of you– in fact, you’ll probably find that it’s highly useful, especially if you are camping and it starts to rain. It’s nice to have room inside for a small folding card table that you can dine on, without feeling claustrophobic.

Second, consider what weather will be like where you camping.  If you aren’t going to be camping in winter like conditions a 3 season tent will be good enough, this is what most tents are.  Winter camping will put more strain on the tent so make sure you get a 4 season tent so that you are protected from the elements. You’ll find that choosing from Coleman 6 man tent models is a great place to start. This way you know that you’re getting a great brand of tent, and you can choose the one that is best suited to the type of weather conditions you’ll find yourself in. While it’s always safest to plan ahead and get a 4 season tent, if you know that for whatever reason you’re never going to be camping in the wintertime, you can save money and just go with the 3 season tent.

Third, consider how much it weighs.  If you are driving right up to your camping spot then the weight might not matter much.  On the other hand, if you are hiking to it every pound adds up.  You will want to get the lightest one possible that still meets your needs. In this case, a 6 man family tent might not be the best idea, unless you can divide the parts of the tent among everyone’s backpacks, or take turns carrying it.

Fourth, how difficult will it be to set up.  Remember that tents generally require some assembly at the campsite.  After purchasing your tent make sure to practice pitching it at home before the first time you use it.  This will help you understand where the tent poles go and how much time it’s going to take to set it up. But if you get a classic 6 man dome tent, you will probably be fine, particularly if you have one or more people to help you out with the set up.

When you’re shopping, keep all of these factors in mind. The point is not to get the best-rated tent or the one that your friend absolutely raved about. What you need is to get the best 6 man tent for you and your camping needs.
