Using a Black Lamp Shade the Right Way

June 2, 2010

Although there are some beautiful black lamp shades around, they do need to be used in the right way and in the right room. You can’t just add any lamp shade you love to any room and expect it to look good. Most lamp shades have a very definite style and that has to match the look of your room.

When it comes to black lamp shades and any other black items in your interior, you will find that they go best with a contemporary style. Black was not used so much traditionally, probably because interior design, was used to brighten and add color to a home. Yet a black and white interior can look very upbeat if you balance the amount of each white and black color you use. A simple plain black lamp shade will look great in such a monochromatic color scheme particularly if you use it with an equally simple lamp base such as those in polished chrome, unadorned blocks of natural wood or smooth plain white or black ceramic shapes.

If your lamp shade is not pure black, but a mixture of black and white or cream then you can use with other styles. For instance, a black and cream toile lamp shade would look good with a romantic bedroom with mainly cream colors.

Mix black with hot pink in your lamp shade and you have the ideal shade to add to a teenage girls bedroom, decorated in colors to match, perhaps with pink bedding and a fluffy black rug. Pink fairy lights would complete the theme.

For the most part a black lamp shade looks best on a table lamp rather than as a pendant shade hanging from the ceiling, however you might use mini chandelier lamp shades for a contemporary chandelier and they would look good with matching table lamp shades.
