Blood Stain Removal On Clothes

May 31, 2010

Blood stains are some of the toughest stains to remove from clothes. Whether it is from a nose bleed or cut, the hemoglobin in blood makes it difficult to remove because it clings to the fabric. There are actually several things in your home that are good at blood stain removal and will take care of those stubborn stains as well as store bought products.

It is easiest to clean fresh blood stains. You should run cold water on the stain immediately. You do not want to give the stain a chance to settle. Use some of your laundry detergent and rub it onto the stain, rinse it and put it into the washer. This works best if your laundry detergent has oxy action or enzymes.

Another great way to clean fresh stains is to make a paste with talcum powder and rub or brush it into the stain with a cotton towel or tooth brush. Let it dry, rinse it again with cold water and put it in a warm or hot wash. For old stains it is best to make a paste out of baking soda or meat tenderizer and let it sit for about thirty to an hour. Rinse it with cold water and put it in washing machine on the warm cycle.

You can also soak the fabric in hydrogen peroxide for half an hour then wash it in warm water. However, you should be careful, hydrogen peroxide can bleach your clothes. Make sure you test it on a small piece of fabric first. This is also important if you are using peroxide to clean carpet blood stains.  You also never want to use hot water to rinse fresh stains, hot water helps blood to settle into your clothes. There are also many store products that remove stains with ease. Just make sure it specifies that it removes blood. Blood stains should no longer be feared there are so many ways to easily remove blood.
