The saxophone derives its name from its Belgian inventor, Adolphe Sax, who created this melodious woodwind instrument in 1840. Saxophones can be alto, tenor or baritone, with several variations within each range. The alto, which is the fourth largest instrument, is popular for playing classical music. For that reason, composers usually choose the alto and compose their music for this saxophone.

If you want to own one, they can be expensive. Cheap alto saxophones are available, however, if you know how to shop. Music stores or saxophone dealers often have used instruments that perhaps were rentals or trade-ins. Preferably, you should shop for a used one that is a well-known and respected brand but in good condition. A used one is perfect if you are acquiring a musical instrument for your child-investing in a new one is not practical until your child demonstrates the seriousness of their commitment to learning the saxophone and is sure what kind they want to own among the different varieties available.

For cheap alto saxophones you can try renting, rent-to-own or just buy a used one if it is a great deal. If you can find a quality brand-name saxophone at 45 percent off the regular retail price consider purchasing. Ensure the condition is good–don’t buy one that needs “just a little fixing up.” Unless you know repair of saxophones, the surface problems may turn out to be internal damage.

Online research is a great way to learn about the price ranges for new and used saxophones, and what are the big brand names well-known sax players prefer. A local music store can guide you regarding brand names and can provide you with used ones in many cases, once you know exactly which kind you want to buy.

Saxophones come in different pitches. The most popular one for alto saxophones is E-flat. This is the range recommended for those just starting to study the saxophone. It is the key that musical pieces and teaching books usually use for their pieces done with the alto saxophone in mind. The alto sax is considered the better choice for the new student to learn on.

Avoid saxophones marked “made in China”. These are inexpensive, but the quality of manufacture is lacking. They come under different brands, as they are imported by various individual vendors. The sound is not true and they are not durable. Stick with those companies who have many years of experience and an excellent reputation that stands behind their musical instruments. Cheap brands could be more expensive in the long run. Find out more cheap alto saxophones at Conn alto saxophone or Frank Holton saxophone.

If you’re getting tired of watching chick flicks and romantic comedies do not forget that drama movies are appreciated by both men and women.  Some of the top drama movies are slotted as date night movies, too.  The top drama movies show several common characteristics.  They keep the viewer interested, they have good acting, and they make you think about life in a completely different way.

Instead of reaching for a romantic comedy on your next date night, check out one of these top drama movies:

  • Schindler’s List:  This movie is disturbing as it shows the gruesome details of the Holocaust but if your date is a thinking person they will enjoy this movie.  It is amazing in its direction and portrays a look at the Holocaust that many are not aware of when it shows how 1100 Jews had their lives saved because of a man called Oskar Schindler.
  • Bonnie and Clyde:  This is one of the top drama movies for date night because it has lots of violence and action for the guys but there is a romantic story line as well for the girls.  It has some shocking moments and a dark humor and even though they are the “bad guys” you’ll be rooting for Bonnie and Clyde to get away in the end.
  • Shawshank Redemption:  A Stephen King book adaptation, this movie has some impressive directing and the great acting doesn’t hurt either.  A young white man and an older black man become close friends in prison and find their way back to freedom.
  • Forrest Gump:  War, fishing boats, love, and romance – this movie is funny and interesting and often surprising.  A “slow” man’s life has a lot more happening than one might think and this makes a great date night drama movie.
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button:  This movie of a man that is born old is fascinating from beginning to end – but backwards.  It puts life into a whole new perspective.
