The Windows operating system provides its own startup optimizer application for manually selecting which programs get run when Windows is booting up. This is a primary way of speeding up the reboot performance. This article steps through how to use the System Configuration utility and some additional tips for improving performance.

The System Configuration application is one of the lesser-known programs and Windows due to the fact that it is not neatly located within the start menu. It provides tabs for doing various operating system changes and computers repairs, one of which relates to the startup list. Here is how you can use it,

  1. From the Start > Run program, type in msconfig then click the open button to launch the application.
  2. Go to the Startup tab.
  3. You will observe that it lists a number of executable files relating to hardware device drivers and third-party applications that are initialized when Windows is booting up. Use the check-boxes to de-select those you wish to leave out of the startup process. This program is unfamiliar then do a search online for the executable file name to gain a better understanding of what the program is doing (i.e. if it is critical or not).
  4. Save the changes that have been made and then restart the PC in order to check if the changes have improved matters. Simply reopen msconfig and select the check boxes again if you want to rollback the changes.

For those applications you leave enabled, do a quick search online to see if you have the latest version of these applications (having the latest version gives you a better chance of having a better performing code). Use Windows update service to download and install device drivers for many the services that are run at boot time.

If you do not wish to use the startup optimizer, or modify which applications are on, you could also consider using the hibernation or standby modes instead of doing a full reboot every single time. These modes are often a lot quicker when rebooting the PC due to the fact that they do not need to initialize applications (they simply use a saved snapshot of all running services to reload the applications).
