What to Look For When Shopping For Cheap Tents

June 8, 2010

Camping is a great opportunity to leave the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy a nice weekend outside with nature.  To camp comfortably though a tent is usually preferred.  Before rushing to the store to get one make sure you know how to decide between the different cheap tents available.

1. Have an idea of how many people will be sleeping in the tent.  When you read the name of a tent it will often include just a simple number like, “2.”  But it also could say “4 man tent.”  This is letting you know how many people can sleep in it.  Don’t base your purchase of that number alone.  It is not always accurate and it isn’t considering how much stuff you are bringing with you or how big the people sleeping in it are.  If you plan on bringing a tent cot or an air mattress you will need more room than that.

2. Are you planning on camping a lot with the tent?  If you are getting a tent to use once a year, you can save some money on buying a cheaper one that just has the basic features.  However, if you plan on using it often you should spend a little more money.  The cheaper tents aren’t going to be as durable and long lasting.  You do get what you pay for.  If you want it to be a quality tent you are going to have to spend more than $20 to get one.

3.  Will you be camping in bad weather?  Most people don’t camp in extreme conditions such as snow and high winds.  If you plan on doing so you can get a 4 Give me a cheap tent over an RV anytime

season tent.  The casual camper on occasion can face sudden thunderstorms at their campsite.   For example, in the Smoky Mountains it is not uncommon to get sudden and severe storms.   Make sure you are prepared for this by getting a tent that has a high quality rain fly and bathtub style floor.  The rain fly will help prevent any leaks from getting inside the tent.  Also, look to see if the seams are double sealed or taped, if not you may want to consider doing this yourself.
