It is a serious responsibility for parents to child-proof their homes. There are so many different things to think of, ranging from securing stairwells to covering up electrical outlets and packing away any ornaments or other objects that could get bumped and broken.
Once a baby begins to get around it is imperative that you make sure all areas of your home where baby will be are secured. The first thing most parents thing about is how to keep their youngster contained in an area that is safe for them. Obviously the best choice is to invest in some gates baby will not be able to climb over or around. These gates can be placed at entrances and at the top or bottom of stairways, safely restricting baby to a specific area.
Usually these gates are made to expand to fit exactly in a doorway or entrance. They are baby-proof, yet still convenient for adults and older children to manoeuver. Once you have decided which areas of your home you will secure for baby, you should then go through the room and look for any potential hazards. One parent I know would actually get down on their hands and knees and crawl around to get a proper child’s perspective on things! Remember it is not only the obvious things that can harm a baby, such as uncovered electrical outlets, but also tiny objects laying around can be picked up and stuck in an ear or a nostril, or can be accidentally swallowed.
A child safety gate is also useful when it comes to keeping small children and pets, such as puppies, separated. While it is great for young children to learn to live with animals and to appreciate them, there are times especially when the child is not being closely supervised, when you would want to keep your pet dog away from them. Accidents can and do happen when small children and puppies get together, usually unintentional of course, but it is best to prevent these things from happening.
No stairway should be without a baby gate. Many parents will buy two, and have one for the top of the stairs and another for the bottom of the stairs. While this may seem a little excessive to some it is helpful to have two as it saves you having to constantly remove and reposition the gate depending on where you and your child are.
