Direct TV Packages Compared With Cable

April 24, 2010

One of the best reasons to drop you cable television company and investigate satellite service is the flexibility offered.  With cable service, you usually have two packages to pick from, either basic cable or digital cable.   While one package might be right for you, usually it ends up being like a square peg in a round hole, as you either have too much content or not enough, and you end up paying more than you want.

If you check into the Direct TV packages being offered, you probably will be a bit surprised to see there are five different options, ranging in price from just $30 a month all the way up to $115 a month for the all inclusive Premier package option.  The basic Family package only has about 50 channels, but is good for families just starting out as there are lots of options for children in this package.

The Premier option is good for big families that may have 3 or 4 television sets in the home.  Here you will have more than 250 channels to pick from if you count the all music channels along with the regular cable networks.  All of the premium movie channels are also part of this bundle as well.   Its nice to be able to tune into HBO or Starz at any given time and have the option of picking from ten different movie channels.  Another great option is to order a DVR and then you can record several movies to watch at your convenience from these premium movie providers.

One disadvantage of the Direct TV bundle is that it is a video only service.  Right now you cannot order telephone or high speed internet service through your satellite TV company, so cable television providers do have an advantage in that they can compete by offering triple play bundles.
