A life jacket is considered essential equipment for anyone that goes out on a boat. While it may be uncomfortable, and a hindrance to free movement, there is no disputing that it is advisable to wear one. If you wait until you really need one, it might be too late. The same can be said for pets that venture away from shore, aboard a boat.
But Dogs Can Swim, Right?
While most dogs are good swimmers, there are some that are not. For breeds with a low percentage of body fat, swimming can be a difficult proposition. Boxers and Dobermans are two examples; these lean and muscular dogs can sink, and find themselves in a dangerous situation rather quickly. Other breeds are not well equipped for swimming, since their short legs, are just not suited for it. Dogs such as Bulldogs, Pugs and Dachshunds fall into this category, they can find themselves in trouble, even in shallow water. And of course, older dogs can tire quickly while swimming. All of these dogs could benefit from wearing a dog life jacket.
Even if a dog does not fall into one of these classes, the water can still be dangerous. In most regions of the United States, and the Western World, water temperatures never climb above the point, where prolonged exposure can be considered save. In water that is 40 degrees Fahrenheit, hypothermia can cause exhaustion, or unconsciousness, in as little as 15 minutes.

Photo by Dan Bennett “Soggydan”There are a wide variety of dog life jackets , as well as life jackets for other pets. A canine life jacket can protect a valued member of the family, from a hazardous circumstance before it’s too late. Pet life jackets are made to keep the animal floating, in a horizontal position, if they should end up in the water. And many also feature a handle to facilitate a speedy rescue if needed. And just as with people, waiting until it’s needed to don one may be too late.
