We have many responsibilities in our daily lives but one that we should be doing everyday to ensure the safety of ourselves and anyone who lives or works near us is fire prevention. Unfortunately, this is not something most of us think about on a daily basis. It is usually not until a fire hits close to home or at your home that these things cross our minds in the future and, by than, it is too late to prevent the damage that already occurred and, as anyone who has ever been directly impacted by a fire knows, the effects can be devastating and can include the loss of all personal effects, the loss of your home and sometimes injury or even death.
Fire prevention may be something that will require a little work on your part, but getting on top of it now will prevent problems in the future and once you have done any major renovations that may be required to help make your home fire-proof, from than on, the daily requirements will be minimal and easy. First of all, you must make sure that all electrical outlets and electronics such as toasters, microwaves and televisions are in top working order and meet the required standards. If you have never replaced the wiring in your home, you may want to have an electrician come in and inspect it to make sure it is up to par and do any work that may be required to bring it to where it should be. Once these things are done, there are a number of things you can do on a daily basis to ensure your home is safe from fire and some of these things are:
1) Unplug any electronics when not in use and especially when you leave the house.
2) Do a walk around the house before you head out and make sure the stove is off, hair appliances are unplugged and the heat is turned off. If it is too cold to turn the heat completely off, make sure that nothing can fall on the heaters and make sure nothing is leaning on or is too close to them.
3) If you smoke in your home, do not smoke in enclosed spaces and always make sure your cigarette is completely out.
4) Have a fire extinguisher and emergency firefighter numbers handy at all times.
5) Report any suspicious activity to local authorities. Arson is on the rise and is a problem in almost every city.
If you take these simple steps, you are closer to making your home and neighborhood safe and you will not be a part of the growing list of people who fall victims to fire everyday simply because they did not take these simple precautions.
