The Benefits Of An Eco Pillow

July 12, 2010

As the name might suggest, an eco pillow is one that uses natural materials instead of synthetic materials. If you are one of those people who thinks that all pillows are the same, it may be time to switch – an eco pillow can be healthier, ensure a good night’s sleep and allow you to play a small part in being environmentally aware.

Eco pillows are available in several different materials. Pillows filled with feathers or eiderdown are both healthy choices; both provide good insulation and can help to keep you warm during cooler months. A horsehair pillow may not be an obvious choice, but it has several advantages – it allows both moisture and air to circulate freely, and keeps its firm, springy feeling over time.

Kapok is a silk-like fiber that comes from the tree of the same name. It has the ability to resist moisture, as well as help with allergens. The seeds are harvested naturally, only after they have fallen to the ground anyway, making it an ideal choice for anyone who is trying to go green.

Kapok pillows sometimes contain quantities of other natural materials such as linen and organic cotton.  One of the most popular and widely available materials for eco pillows is natural latex, which is harvested naturally from rubber trees grown in the tropics. Sleeping on a latex pillow offers several health benefits – latex keeps its shape better than other pillow materials and because of this can offer more support for both the back and the neck. And if you discard a latex pillow, it is naturally biodegradable.

Wool can be an environmentally friendly material, if it is taken from sheep that have been raised organically and hasn’t been treated with toxic chemicals. Wool has several other advantages – it is resistant to mold, doesn’t attract dust mites; and of course is able to cool in the summer and keep you warm during the winter. Buckwheat is also a filling for pillows that is often farmed organically; it repels dust mites and is able to mold itself to the shape of your head.

Eco pillows are becoming more popular and affordable; they are widely available both in stores and by ordering on line. They can help you to feel good about yourself in two different ways – allowing you to ‘go green’ and at the same time helping to keep you healthy while you are asleep.
