Elderly Assisted Living Versus Independent Living

December 17, 2009

Deciding between Independent Living and Elderly Assisted Living can be a difficult task.  Learn the facts about both options so that you can make a wise choice.

The simplest way to describe the difference between Independent Living and Assisted Living lies in the definitions of the words, themselves. “Independent” means “alone,” or “by yourself.”  The word “assisted” means “with help.”

The Freedom of Independent Living

Independent living can be a wonderful experience for seniors, provided that they are able to perform most daily tasks by themselves.  These include basic things like getting up in the morning, getting dressed, taking care of personal hygiene, simple meal preparation, eating and socializing.  However, Independent Living can also include some services that support these activities. For example, many Senior Independent Living communities provide weekly transportation to grocery stores and doctor appointments.  Some offer one meal a day or more, and most have numerous social activities set up for their residents.  They are not exactly going to take you off on a luxurious vacation to a timeshare resort, but you get the idea.

The Security of Assisted Living

When someone is not able to live independently any more, Assisted Living can be a welcome option.  Most Assisted Living facilities provide three meals daily and they often dispense medications to residents. Frequently, the staff checks on residents to guarantee their well-being. There are usually many, and more structured activities than there are with Independent Living.  More staff is available, as some seniors may need help with dressing, bathing, and moving around.  When a person moves into an Assisted Living community, an assessment is done with family members present to determine what help is needed and in which areas.  Most families are relieved and happy to know that their loved one is safe and secure with many people around to help.  Obviously, Assisted Living is more expensive than Independent Living.  Perhaps it is time to sell your timeshare and settle down after all!

Which Community to Choose?

When considering Independent Living or Assisted Living, the differences are fairly clear.  The choice depends on the needs and wants of the person who will be moving into the community.  If it is your role to help an aging parent or friend with this decision, you can be supportive by helping to gather information and visiting the facilities that are available.

I liked the blog post on differentiating between assisted and independent living. I write a blog dealing with senior issues and independent living. I also work as a nurse in assisted living and find that most people do not really understand the difference between the two. You paint a good picture in your write up. Thanks, Linda
