Choosing Fixed Blade Hunting Knives

April 21, 2010

If you are searching for fixed blade hunting knives, you will find that there are numerous selections to choose from.  The prices can range from less than $50 to well over $300.  The question becomes, which one should you actually purchase?  It can be a little bit confusing because they all basically look the same.  This is where the similarities may end.  It is not necessarily how the knife actually looks, but how it is constructed.

These types of hunting accessories are normally used for several reasons.  For those people involved in hunting, fishing and camping, there are fixed Blade hunting knives designed for these purposes.  They can be used for skinning and field dressing the prey that you have just caught.  The fishing knives are great for filleting and gutting that fresh catch.  Some of the fishing knives may have a thin blade designed especially for fillet purposes.

There are also all-purpose utility knives in this design that can be used for a variety of outdoor purposes.  Any of these styles are an important part of your outdoor equipment.  Whether you are a hunter or someone that enjoys camping, it is important to have a knife handy at all times.  Many people prefer a fixed blade as opposed to the folding knife due to easier use.  Even though it is easier to use, it may not have some of the same safety features that the folding hunter knife might have.

The important part of any knife purchase is to make sure that the product is of high quality.  The blade of these knives needs to be constructed of quality materials like S30V stainless steel.  This can give you a phenomenal edge to the knife and flexibility.  This type of steel is easy to sharpen and maintain.  You should be sure that the blade has non-corrosive properties in order to battle rust. If a knife has a titanium coating or high chromium properties, you will know the knife will have better resistance to rust.

Figure out the type of knives you are interested in and visit some of your local hunting and camping stores.  Check out the Internet, where you will be able to find discounts and competitive pricing.  Do not forget, all of these knives should include the leather sheath for carrying purposes.
