Gold Pocket Watch History

April 21, 2010

The collecting of antique pocket watches is quickly becoming a favorite among hobbyists. Nostalgic pieces of American history are the most wanted additions in any antique pocket watch collection. In the early 1500s, people wished for a clock that could be taken anywhere. However, many laughed and said it could not be done. Clocks were large and heavy. How could they possibly be downsized?

By the 16th century, clock makers were trying to make clock portability a dream come true. The breakthrough came when they discovered that springs could be used in place of weights, keeping a clock functional, yet allowing for a smaller, take-along size. Still, pocket watches would remain bulky and awkward for some time to come. Despite this, they were a quick hit among the people, as their dream of being able to tell the time no matter where they were had finally come to pass.

With the dawning of the 17th century, the pocket watches that are well known today came to be. The design was changed for a sleeker, smaller and rounder look, making them more convenient and lighter in weight. As popularity grew, especially among those in the upper classes, watchmakers began adding intricate carvings, gold, silver and precious metals, and gems to make them appeal even more and increase their value. These beautiful gold pocket watches were not only artistic masterpieces, but were also quality, functioning timepieces.

Even today, pocket watches are a lovely and stylish choice for any collector. Regardless of your gender, occupation or place in life, there is certainly a pocket watch that fits your personality. Through the many centuries since pocket watches came into being, they have remained a very popular choice for men and women. The early 20th century did bring in the wristwatch, which sent gold pocket watch sales on the decline, especially after World War II. Still many people love them, both then and now, and an antique pocket watch is the perfect way to add a piece of years past to your collection.
