Green Home Insulation Installation

May 8, 2010

Many homes that are currently being built are being created with the environment in mind.  There are many energy and environmentally efficient products available to builders and contractors.  Many of these green technologies help the home builder save money in the long run as well.  One area that has many green options is home insulation.

There are several choices for eco friendly home builders when it comes to insulating the home for warmth in the winter and cool in the summer.

Cellulose is a plant based material that is suitable for small projects that need loose fill. It is especially recommended for attic floors, and can be blown in either dry or damp depending on the builder’s needs.  It require much less energy than fiberglass does to manufacture, and is often at least seventy five percent post consumer waste.  However, one should consider that this material may settle or absorb moisture, causing problems.  Its use should probably be avoided in areas that are exposed to frequent moisture.

Cotton is a similar option.  One should be informed as to how the cotton used in their insulation is grown.  Even though cotton is a renewable resource, it may be grown using dangerous chemicals such as insecticides or herbicides that are rough on the environment.  Cotton can be used in similar situations as cellulose and is a recyclable material.  It too can absorb moisture, so water exposure should be avoided.
Mineral wool, which may also be sold under the names rock wool or slag wool, is available in many forms.  It is a flame retardant that is made from naturally abundant materials like natural rock.  It is moisture resistant, but has the potential to release irritants during installation.  Proper safety measures should be taken.  It is often three quarters or more recycled materials.

One can visit their local home building supply or hardware store for more information or price quotes ans information on how to install home insulation.
