Shahrukh Khan: King of Hindi Movies

June 2, 2010

Once in a while, there comes an actor that defines an era, people look back at their lives and reflect on how that actor was a constant presence in their lives during the years that he was productive and featured in movies. In the West, we have icons like John Wayne, Cary Grant, James Dean. These are all actors who lived in and gave life to a specific time in history, who encapsulated the times that they lived in and expressed its essence on the screen and in front of millions who took to the cinema. While we have Hollywood stars today who are famous and adored, as well as bigger-than life entertainers such as professional wrestlers there are few or none who could be called living legends. In India, there is a man who could still hold this title, who could still live up to the devotion of fans, who for millions upon millions of his countrymen will live on as THE actor who they knew and loved. This star and King of Bollywood is none other than Shahrukh Kahn.
Kahn (also known as Shah Rukh Khan or SRK) came to stardom with his debut in the film Deewana in the year 1992, and from then throughout the nineties and into the present day has maintained a strong presence in Hindi movies. He has dark, dashing good looks and a physique to match- tall and built, with a dominating bearing. His face has the kind of rugged handsomeness that makes women swoon, yet there is a dark, perhaps dangerous quality that says that he is more- much more- than just a pretty face. But a legend is built on more than just good looks, and the energy that Khan brings to the silver screen is one that is commanding. Even during the scenes where he acts sweet, or romantic, he remains unmistakably the strong leading man.
SRK is considered to be not only the biggest star of Hindi film, but the most successful star, period.
