There have been many studies that have shown that one of the best ways to get your child to learn a new language is by immersing him or her at a young age. They have an incredible ability to pick up vocabulary and grammar naturally, making all of us old timers look incapable. The great thing about immersion at a young age is that you can help with more than just the language and surround your child with different things from Japan to help keep his attention.
If you’re looking for something bright and exciting for a younger child, a Japanese eraser might be a lot of fun. They can be quite small so make sure not to get one that presents a choking hazard, but for some piece of mind they are non-toxic so everything should be ok. These make a perfect gift for the new learner because it can make practicing kanji that much more fun. If you’re child is about to start tutoring or class, go ahead and get some Iwako Japanese erasers with his notebook and he will probably be even more exciting to write kanji over and over and over again (I know, sound so exciting!).
But in reality, this is a great way to encourage children. It sounds pretty based in consumerism, but new little toys like the erasers will remind the student about his studies in addition to how fun the toys themselves are. The ultimate goal is to get the studying to happen naturally – to make it so that he would study anyway, just because it is fun. If the erasers from Japan don’t work, you can give some of the other collectibles a try (and for some other possible ideas one website is World of Japanese Erasers). The nice thing about Japanese being the target language is that you’ll probably never run out of fun collectibles to bribe, I mean encourage, you child with. Most of them are so fun that you might even find yourself running to the store to pick up something for yourself. Just enjoy all of the fun things from Japan!
