It was not that long ago that the only golf clubs that you could get were designed solely for men. Given the demographics I guess it wasn’t that big of a stretch to only design clubs for this demographic. And even still today the lion’s share of clubs are designed with the average male body in mind. In other words, a golfer who is 5 feet 8 inches or so and is of medium build. This doesn’t fit the makeup of just about any woman and even the ones that fit the height profile almost assuredly don’t fit the build component of the design. Women are simply different than men. It was with this idea that ladies golf clubs were designed. The idea is to find a golf club that will fit the way that women are built and play the wonderful game of golf.
To that end a women’s golf club has a bit of a different feel. They are designed for a much shorter person, generally scoped to be perfect for someone that is about 5 feet 4 inches in height. In addition they are generally lighter in weight to allow for a faster club head speed with the same swing speed. On top of that the kick point of the shaft is designed to make the ball rise easier and faster than the typical men’s club. This is again due to the slower swing speed in general. Sure if you are Michelle Wie you have an impressive swing speed that rivals a lot of PGA tour men’s players, but the typical ladies player has a slightly slower swing speed that makes it harder to get the ball up to the lofty heights required for those soft landings on greens.
So in relation to where we were a mere two decades ago, the advent of clubs designed specifically for women has made the game of golf open to a far more diverse population. Gone are the days of being completely male dominated with no real way for a large contingent of female players to enter the sport. It has even got to the point that there are special designs for golf clubs for petite women. In this day and age there is no reason to be using clubs that don’t fit your game, especially if you are a woman.
