Although we see lanyards on a daily basis, many of us do not know the origins of the braided fabric. When there was still a cavalry in the army, lanyards were used to secure whistles, pistols and swords. With the cavalry riding their horses, it was always easy to lose things on their way to battle. Imagine if the cavalry lost their swords, what will they do if they have already fired one shot with their pistols? If the lanyards were not around, many battles would have had different results.
Lanyards were very important to the military. In fact, even the navy used them to secure some of their items while at sea. Today however with the invention of holsters and other gun carrying equipment, badge lanyards are no longer used the old fashioned way. They are still used though but only in special occasions when soldiers have to use their decorated uniforms. Different braid patterns and color combination of the fabric are placed in the shoulders of military uniform to signify or denote the regiment that certain soldier belongs to. Because of its history, they have been retained in many military uniforms and are now used as part of the uniforms’ decorative elements.
Regular lanyards used by civilians are fabric tied to a loop and usually have a clip on the lower end to hold ID cards and keys.
