Can I Install An Electric Power Shower In Large Walk In Showers?

June 22, 2010

Many people are replacing old bathtubs and small cubical showers with large walk in showers that have glass doors or no doors at all. Many of these newer designed spaces are sleek and contemporary with the space needed for more than one showerhead or even for body jets or rainfall showers. The question that has been posed is whether or not an electric power shower is a good idea in such large open spaces and if so what one?

Gravity Fed Water Supply?

The answer to that question is easy, but has two parts: first, you must be sure that your water system is gravity fed. Why? Because power showers are called “power” because they have built-in pumps that give extra water pressure to the shower so the water remains at an even temperature. These types of showers with a pump system will not operate on a high pressure water system. So the answer to the first part is that an electric shower that has a pump is ideal if you have a gravity fed water supply, otherwise look for a different solution.

From The Ceiling

The second part of the answer pertains to the fact that large walk in showers are about space and comfort, often for one or two people at once. Most power showers are small units with a single hand device or a single showerhead that does not fully take advantage of the fact that you have a space that’s open and large enough for fancier shower equipment. That said, there is at least one product on the market that can be recommended for walk in shower use. That product is the Aqualisa Axis Digital Pumped Shower which is ceiling mounted and therefore delivers a steady, full stream of water, which remains at a constant temperature, all the time, from the ceiling and not just from a small handheld device. Not only that, it is a unique and sleek unit that comes with shower controls and fittings that are very contemporary and go well with open walk in shower spaces and wetrooms.

Here’s another great thing about this product: the actual processor is very small and can be hidden elsewhere in the bathroom or in the ceiling, so long as it’s not more than 7 meters away from the shower. Once installed the thermostatically controlled pumping system blends the water to a perfect temperature, which you will have set, and it showers down from the ceiling…great for one or two people. Yes, the whole thing is controlled by the digital processor, and you can slo get a remote so that you can turn on the shower from outside of the bathroom. How very funky is that? The Aqualisa Axis electric power shower costs about £514, which is a lot more than most power showers but is well worth it if you have invested in building a large shower space that’s modern and open.
