Understanding Laser Liposuction Risks

April 23, 2010

Laser liposuction has ushered a change in how many patients and surgeon view the fat removal procedure. The new technique has allowed for more precise removal of unwanted body fat while greatly reducing the amount of risk and damage caused to neighboring tissue. Many patients of laser liposuction have been able to recover very quickly and almost painlessly due to the lowered amount of stress and trauma caused to the treated area. Some of the most common risks that have plagues traditional liposuction are almost nonexistent when the laser technique is utilized.

The most common problem with traditional liposuction is the massive amount of blood loss during the surgery caused by damaged blood vessels. Since laser liposuction is much more accurate at targeting fat cells blood vessels are less prone to damage and therefore very little blood is leaked. In the occasion that there is some blood leakage the amounts are often so small that the heat of the laser evaporates and dries the area. This is good for the recovery period because many of the common side effects of liposuction during the healing process result from poor drainage of the treated area before closing up the incision.

Something that is often not mentioned is the side effects specific to the laser technique. However rare and infrequent it may be, laser liposuction risks do exist that are associated precisely to the technique. When a laser is left in one part of the area for too long it can actually cause burns or blisters to the underside of the skin. This in itself is a problem but the damage caused under the skin sometimes disrupts the melanin production part of the tissue which can cause the skin to become discolored from unusual pigmentation. This is actually something that happens during traditional liposuction when surgeons try to remove fat too close to the underside of the skin. That is why it is important to shop carefully and find a board certified surgeon to perform the procedure.
