Beyond The Latex Mattress Topper: Look At Your Options

April 20, 2010

When shopping for a mattress cover for a bed, there are some major considerations to think about.  Various features, such as fabric, style and price are just a few.  There are different purposes for mattress covers, like support or comfort.  Four common types of mattress covers include: memory foam, latex, down and wool. They are available in all the usual sizes, including California King.  Covers can range in thickness from one to several inches.

The various fabrics or material have different features or characteristics.  Much of what you select is based on personal preference and need.  The more costly types are memory foam and latex.  These two provide support and help keep the body in proper alignment while sleeping, by conforming to a person’s shape.  Motion is not felt by another person in the bed, when one moves or gets in or out.  However, memory foam soaks in warmth and can be quite odorous initially.  This material and latex may present challenges in cleaning and do wear out after a while.  Latex has antibacterial properties, but is not a wise choice for someone with allergies to the substance.

The other materials, wool and down, help keep body temperature even and are comfortable.  Both can be professionally cleaned by a favorite dry cleaner, though some down can be washed.  Another option for cleaning wool is steaming.  Both can fight bacteria as well.  These types of covers do not offer much in support.  They become easily flattened and must be frequently plumped.

Comfortable mattress covers are available in variety of prices for specific brands, from under fifty dollars to several hundreds.  Much of the cost is determined by size and quality.  Some can be bought directly from the manufacturer.  Others are available at retailers or from online discounters.  Popular Brands, such as Sealy, Tempur=pedic, Therapedic, Isotonic, Serta and Simmonsare easily found.  Chain retailers like Wal-mar and Costco offer their own versions in many prices ranges.  There are many brands made from all natural materials.  Online sources often have video demos or instructions for viewing.  YouTube is another alternative for viewing demos and gathering customer satisfaction reviews.

The kind of matress topper selected depends on how much the buyer is willing to spend and on other needs and preferences.  Products should be extensively reviewed before purchasing, to ensure that the right model or type to meet the consumer’s specific comfort and health needs is selected.
