Exploring The Wonder of Magic Movies

May 11, 2010

The art of magic has intrigued people for centuries long before the technology of modern Hollywood movies had arrived. So as man made technology has grown, so have the imaginations of the magicians, writers, and directors who use motion pictures to create new worlds based on this practice.

Since the birth of cinema, the magic movie has sustained a strong, never-dying liking by moviegoers. Disney is a well-known company associated with wonder and magic and this fact was reflected in their legendary 1940 film Fantasia. The ’90s Disney film Hocus Pocus also catered magic to children with a playful 3 witches theme. The 2005 movie Bewitched starring Nicole Kidman was based on the popular 1964 TV series about a witch trying to live a normal life as a suburban wife to a mortal, but was met with moderate success. However, magical movies have recently experienced a pop culture uprising with the release of the internationally acclaimed Harry Potter films, which have surpassed Star Wars’ popularity by becoming the highest grossing film series of all time. This series is not the first to popularize the term of witches and wizards, but it is legendary in being the first to place magic at the forefront of modern fantasy movie technology.

Of course, other movies about magic that mirror the success of Harry Potter are The Chronicles of Narnia, the Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars, all among the most well-known stories in history.

Perhaps the intrigue of magic movies lies in its fantastical elements. In a world where reality is all too real and mundane, the average moviegoer wants to escape the chains of this harsh reality and dive into an entirely new world where almost anything is possible. Therefore, magic will continue to intrigue the world and its recent resurgence in movies will only bring more excitement to the big scene.
