Maple syrup has become a necessity for breakfast for a lot of people. You would find that a lot of individuals would even refuse to eat waffles or pancakes if maple syrup was not available to complement them. Maple syrup has become so important that it is always included in grocery lists of shoppers. Then again, you would find that there are some who prefer to make their own maple syrup at home. If you need help in making your own maple syrup, you can follow the instructions provided in this article. You should be aware though, that patience, effort and time are needed if you are to be successful. Having access to your own maple tree will be to your advantage.
You would need to have the following equipment on hand: a power drill with a bit the size of half an inch, a pail, a spout made of either metal or plastic, a wool filter, a wooden spoon or a heat-resistant spatula, a big enough shallow pan, some containers for storage, and a candy thermometer. Once you have prepared these, you can now begin by going to the maple tree and locating a solid spot in it that is roughly 2-4 inches above ground level. Then, drill a hole with a depth of roughly 2 inches. Insert the spout into the hole and place the pail in position ready to catch the sap from the spout. It is good to know that the best time to collect sap from maple trees is during the early part of the year up to the first week of the month of March.
After you have collected the sap, pour it onto a shallow pan and bring to a boil. Watch it carefully and make sure not to burn it. Continue boiling until it has become highly concentrated. Foam should form on top as it boils. Skim off this foam using a spatula or wooden spoon. Keep checking the temperature using the candy thermometer. Once the temperature has become 23 degrees past the boiling point of water, turn off the heat. Filter the heated maple syrup to remove impurities using the wool filter. The last step is to package the syrup properly and store at room temperature.
