Classic Cruising With the Mobylette

May 6, 2010

The Mobylette, which first came on the market in 1949, is now considered a classic vehicle. This mode of transportation was primarily popular in Europe. In 2002, it was banned from use in France because it did not meet the country’s high emissions standards.  It is a two-wheeled motorized bike, also known as a scooter or moped.
The product had a very long history. The company that created the original, Motobecane, went bankrupt in the early 1980s. However, it still maintains popularity among collectors. It has the advantage of not requiring a motorcycle license.

Given that these vehicles are no longer produced, when one is added to a collection, it will need quite a bit of maintenance. There may be parts missing. In addition, it will require updates to make them legal to ride. This is particularly a concern when it comes to emissions standards.

The first thing that needs to be checked is whether the engine works. If it does not, there are a few things that could be wrong. It is clear that at least one of those things is not functioning. The things an engine needs to work are a spark, some gas, and compression.

Some very common things preventing the bike from running are a dirty carburetor, a spark plug that is fouled by either oil or carbon, and the heating points in the ignition worn, dirty, or adjusted incorrectly. A spark plug becomes fouled when too much oil finds its way into the combustion chamber.

The Mobylette is a classic bike that does not require a motorcycle license to ride it. They have not been made since 1981 when the company who first created the vehicle went bankrupt. Since there are no contemporary models, collectors will need some mechanical knowledge. This is because most of these vehicles will need updates and repairs. A collector will not be able to use the bike if it does not meet legal requirements, including emissions standards.
