The coastline due west of the capital city of Managua has long been a vacation spot for local Nicaraguans. The resorts at Montelimar and Pochomil have been drawing visitors for years. Visit over Semana Santa (“Holy Week”) and the beaches will be full of holidaymakers and you’ll find it hard to get a spot at one of the beach side restaurants.
But in recent years the appeal of the Central Coast Area is broadening. In particular, the area has started to attract the interest of international tourist visitors and Nicaragua real estate developers. A key reason for this is it’s location under 1 hr from the international airport, a factor that sets it apart from other purchasing destinations in the country. For example, San Juan del Sur, the hottest spot for real estate in Nicaragua, is over two hours away.
Three major real estate developments are underway in this area, with more in the wings: Montecristo Beach and Golf Resort, Gran Pacifica and Seaside Mariana. Each project has plans for a championship golf course. At Gran Pacifica, the front 9 of the Tommy Hagen course are now complete, making it the first championship-length course on Nicaragua’s coast. Montecristo Beach and Golf Resort has a Mike Young course designed into its master plan and Seaside Mariana intends to build a Jack Nicklaus course.
The result will be three championship golf courses within 45 minutes of each other. Once complete the Central Coast will lay claim to being the most important golfing destination in Nicaragua and be a rival to the Guanacaste golf courses that are so integral to the Costa Rica real estate scene.
But this area is not all about golf. The beaches are long and un-crowded, the surf breaks will tempt beginners and accomplished surfers alike and the prices are affordable.
So if you’re visiting Nicaragua don’t ignore this area. San Juan del Sur is certainly worth a visit but make sure you include the Central Coast on your itinerary. After all it’s under 1hr from the international airport.
