All About Pearl Bracelets

July 12, 2010

While bracelets never really go out of style, the chunkier bracelets and bangles that have been in style over the last couple of years don’t suit everyone. Those with small wrists may find them overwhelmed by such bold pieces, not to mention that they hide the wrist instead of emphasizing it. Pearls, on the other hand, have such a delicate grace and feminine beauty that they are the perfect alternative. Though pearl bracelets aren’t a good choice for everyday, when worn for special occasions they will definitely attract compliments. There are many versions available, from multi-strand, to cuffs. The classic tin cup is available in bracelet form, too. With so many styles, you’re sure to find something to fit your unique style.

Some bracelets are more formal than others. The most formal is probably the classic bracelet which consists of a single strand. This is a perfect complement to a pearl necklace or earrings and is often included when you buy a pearl jewelry set. Cuff bracelets decorated with pearls are a more casual way to make a statement, though as mentioned above, if you have small wrists you may want to stay away. A more delicate version is the “woven” bracelet, which consists of many small strands of pearls intertwined. Finally, there is the “tin cup,” which is made of pearls spaced at intervals along a fine chain, wire, or even thread. This type of bracelet is based on the ever popular tin cup or floating pearl necklace which was first worn by Rene Russo in the movie Tin Cup.

Freshwater pearls are the most affordable, though seen as less formal than Akoya. Generally the quality today is comparable to most saltwater pearls so you can get great value for your money. Freshadama pearls, which are a top of the line brand of freshwater pearls, are nearly indistiguishable from Akoya pearls in all categories, and due to their high nacre content are equally if not more durable. Freshwater pearls also come in many feminine colors including pink and lavender. If you love pink, there are many pink pearl bracelets on the market today.

Saltwater pearls provide some other options. Akoya pearls are the classic white that everyone thinks of when they think of the classic pearl necklace.  They are almost always perfectly round with very high luster, but they have some disadvantages, namely, their low nacre content and high price. South Sea and Tahitian pearls are the most exotic. South Sea pearls are known for their warm colors including gold, while Tahitians are known for their black and peacock pearls.

If price is a main concern of yours, consider getting a freshwater pearl bracelet with cz stones set between the pearls. This has a beautiful effect and will look like a much more expensive piece of jewelry than it really is, and will go perfectly with any cubic zirconia rings or earrings that you might already have.

Pearls are mysterious, elegant, and beautiful, and they confer those qualities upon their wearer. Though pearl bracelets aren’t for everyday situations, they are among the most feminine pieces of jewelry a woman can own, and an essential part of any jewelry collection.
