Two Things You Can Do To Reduce Electricity Consumption
January 15, 2010 – 2:46 amWith the cost of fuel on the rise it is becoming necessary to find other sources of electricity, or ways to reduce our usage. There are actually many ways one can employ to save on electricity costs, which often get overlooked or are not given serious thought. We will look at two ways that you could possibly make use of to reduce your electricity expenditure.
1. Improve the insulation of your windows. Windows are actually one of the main places in your home where energy is wasted. In the summer, poorly insulated windows will cause your home to be heated more than you might care for, and which will require more energy to cool it down. In the winter, heat inside your home will be lost through these windows, causing you to have to expend more energy to keep your home warm. It makes sense therefore to improve the insulation of your windows as much as is feasible. If you’re still using single pane windows, then it makes sense to upgrade to at least double panes. Triple pane windows are even more energy efficient than dual panes, but are really costly, and depending on how extreme the temperature gets where you live, might not be worth the extra cost.
If you have sliding glass doors, then you should be even more concerned with their energy efficiency. This is because they occupy a much larger space than regular windows and therefore will potentially be an even bigger factor in your home’s energy efficiency. You can consider getting triple panes for your sliders, but costs are even more likely to be prohibitive here. One thing you can do to compensate for this, is by getting good window treatments for your sliding glass doors that will improve their insulation.
2. Make better use of your monitor or computer screen. The monitor, especially the older types (ie. the non LCD ones), is a major consumer of electricity. Turn off your monitor when not using. Or you could set your computer to go into standby mode instead of letting the screen saver come on. This you should probably do anyway, regardless of whether you are in the habit of switching off your monitor, as this will also reduce energy expended by your computer.
Only two ways have been presented here to help you save on your electricity costs, but they have the potential to really put a dent in your bill if taken advantage of.
