Seeing a blue screen error should not be regarded as a terminal fault with your computer. This can be repaired using the following logical steps in those instances where a corrupt registry is at fault. A Reimage review is used as a final stage to showcase how PC maintenance software has automated registry repairs, even when the computer fails to boot correctly.
After experiencing a blue screen error (with the code 0x80072F76 – stating the registry file has been corrupted) I compiled the following steps to remedy the faulty registry, specifically when Windows fails to boot up.
- Log into Windows under another account. If the hive is damaged for a single user then this will help get Windows booted. Once in, back up personal data, roll back the registry file (if earlier versions are maintained) or attempt repairs using registry repair tools such as Reimage.
- Hit F8 as Windows is starting and choose to start in safe-mode. This restricts which services run. If the registry fault relates to one of these services then you can at least get the system started in safe-mode, back-up data, roll back the registry and/or use registry repair software.
- Start up Windows using the boot disks (provided with new machines) and run all system scan options. This will not directly fix the registry keys but may highlight indirect causes (faulty drivers, disk issues).
If the above steps fail then it is time to use PC maintenance software to automate a repair and bypass the blue screen issue. Reimage does this by providing a boot application (available online) that can boot Windows in a semi-safe mode with web access enabled.
Internet access is required to run the Reimage online service (via a browser) that scans the registry, operating systems and file system for faults. This takes anything from 15 to 30 minutes to complete and report its results. The proceeding Reimage repair stage resets faulty registry entries using healthy settings and upgrades driver/application files from its repository of over 20 million files.
The key approach with these home PC repairs is to use backup copies of critical files were possible and if this fails it is a trivial task to automate the repair using online services.
