Turn Your Round Kitchen Table Into a Drop Leaf Table

July 5, 2010

When you are running low on floor space in your kitchen and don’t want to completely get rid of your round kitchen table to make room you have only two options: you can either purchase a smaller round kitchen table and get rid of the old and larger one or you can turn that old one into a drop leaf table. Getting rid of your old kitchen table is not the most cost effective of options so it is time to bust out that electric saw from the garage and get to work.

Before we begin, please keep in mind that a drop leaf kitchen table can only be made out of wood kitchen tables. Do not attempt to alter the structure of a glass or metal kitchen table. You are liable to shatter the tabletop, ruining the table and possibly hurting you and others in the process. You should not attempt to turn even your wood round kitchen table into a drop leaf table unless an expert carpenter supervises you who has done the procedure before. The writer of this article strongly suggests that you not try this at home unless you can afford a brand new round kitchen table.

Anyway, to turn your wood kitchen table into a drop leaf round kitchen table you must separate the tabletop from the table legs. Most table legs can be unscrewed from the supports underneath the table and removed easily. Table makers make the legs removable so that the table can be transported in less space and reassembled later. You are going to use this to your advantage.

A proper drop leaf kitchen table has a tabletop broken into three parts: two half circles and a center. You want to draw two straight lines parallel to each other down the middle of the table about a foot apart. Once your lines are drawn, cut the table using them as guidelines. You should now have a three-part tabletop.

Once you are finished cutting your table into three parts you must install hinges on either side of the rectangular middle piece (also known as the leaf) and attach them to the ends of the half circles. If done properly you should be able to fold the tabletop at the hinges. You have now made your large tabletop into one that can adjust in size. Depending on the type of table you have you are going to have to reinstall the legs in different places so that the table can be supported no matter which side is dropped down.

If all else fails you at least can have a brand new half round kitchen table.
