In a society that is quickly becoming more and more urbanized, real estate developers are running into the problem of fitting more and more people into the same amount of space. In order to combat this issue, they are building homes smaller and smaller. This can be especially problematic in rooms such as the kitchen, where, traditionally, a good bit of space is required in which to work efficiently. While small kitchens can, if used wisely, be just as effective as larger ones, there are a number of different challenges that small kitchens face that larger ones never need to think about.
The lack of storage space is going to be a primary concern when you are working in a small kitchen. Even though there are fewer than one hundred items the most households regularly purchase at the grocery store, you still need places to store all of it. The best solution, unless you have an external pantry somewhere in your home, is to make the most efficient use of the space you have. Hanging baskets, overhead storage, and wall-mounted shelves are all effective ways of countering the storage issue.
The next issue you are going to have to face is a lack of room for appliances, especially when it comes to countertop ones such as a blenders, microwaves, and toaster ovens. The best way to deal with this issue is to have such appliances not only multitask whenever possible, as is the case with a microwave / toaster oven. Aside from that, all you can really do is keep on hand only what you are going to use very regularly, and to store it away when it is not going to be used immediately. This all stems from a severe lack of counter top space that most tiny kitchens suffer from.
Small kitchen remodeling gives you many different opportunities to solve these issues. The next time you perform a small kitchen remodel, consider integrated appliances, overhead storage, and keep in mind that everything, even counter space, needs to multitask.
