Stop Hair Loss In Women

January 18, 2010 – 12:41 am

You may not know this, most people don’t, but 40% of all premature hair loss cases involve women. That seems like a very big number I know but the reason it is not well known is because women have tended to hide their hair loss by literally keeping it under wraps. Either wigs or hats were the most chosen method of covering up this problem. This may have worked well in years past but now women don’t want to be tied down worrying about whether or not their wigs will fall off. They want to be out living life and being active.

There actually is a very good hair loss treatment for women that has been approved by the US FDA. It is a 2% Minoxidil solution. Minoxidil is a drug that was originally developed to treat high blood pressure. It did this by enlarging the tiny blood vessels in the body so they could carry the blood supply easier. This apparently allows better blood flow to reach the hair follicles and thus keeps them healthy. This solution has been shown to be a good way to stop hair loss women and can be bought over the counter.

When men utilize this drug they usually take a 5% solution but the 2% is the strength the US government has determined is safe for females. Some women have used the 5% solution, since it is sold over the counter, and they have shown good results but this mixture has not been OK’d by the Food and Drug Administration. This drug is applied topically, that means rubbed into the scalp, twice a day in the morning and night. The results seem to improve as a hair loss treatment if at least one of the daily applications is after a shower when the scalp is warm and pliable.

So far there have been very few side effects from the use of Minoxidil. A slight few people have shown some itching and redness but this is rare. If you are starting to notice thinning or balding spots on your head then talk to your doctor about using Minoxidil. You should always consult with your physician when you start any new treatment even if it is over the counter.
