New Generation Synthetic Grass Looks Real

January 27, 2010

There are many different types of artificial grasses available on the market although most of us will only really call to mind one or two different varieties, depending on which we have been exposed. For many people artificial grass is the stuff they play football on. It looks like carpet and it makes for a fast, free-flowing game and that’s about it. But synthetic grass is a lot more than just a sports surface nowadays. It is a viable alternative to natural grass and it is a way to help conserve water.

Sports turf and synthetic running tracks were the original types of synthetic surfaces that replaced grass arenas. The upkeep and the uneven surfaces meant that an enormous amount of maintenance was required to keep them in outstanding condition. When the chance came to provide a more level playing field with the promise that maintenance costs would be slashed many arenas began to change.

A type of artificial grass surface that is quickly growing is the grass used for artificial putting greens. The prospect of installing a practice putting green is appealing to more and more golfers and the price is reasonable enough that quite a few are adding them to their backyards. Golf greens already have the consistency of a carpet and so an artificial putting green closely replicates the surface a golfer will experience on the course.

The artificial grass that is manufactured today for residential landscaping purposes is vastly different to the early types of artificial turf. The grass blades more closely resemble the species of grass after which the brands are names, i.e., bluegrass, rye, fescue and the grass is more tightly woven to look more grass-like. There have also been improvements in the infill that is used with the landscape synthetic grass. In the past the infill was typically made out of recycled rubber tires that were crushed down into rubber pellets. The artificial turf had the appearance of being infested with millions of ants as the rubber showed through the grass blades.

Now with the new generation of synthetic grass and their more natural looking infill it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell the fake grass from the real.
