Natural Gout Remedies

January 14, 2010

Gout is a painful condition caused by high levels of uric acid in a person’s blood. It crystallizes and settles into tendons and joints and is marked by inflammation that attacks the joints. Though a bad case of gout is usually treated with NSAIDS, colchicines or steroid treatments, some home remedies for gout can help alleviate the pain.

Ice is one of the most popular ways to relieve inflammation. Ice is a great tool for pain reduction and applying it directly to the affected area for ten to fifteen minutes can make the pain ease. Epsom Salt is another treatment for gout. Since gout often manifests in the feet, an Epsom salt batch can be a good way to treat feet or toes that are painful. Dissolve Epsom salts in a warm tub of water according to directions on the package and soak the affected foot in the warm water for almost instantaneous relief from painful gout.

Fresh strawberries, nuts, seeds, and grains can help to neutralize the uric acids that contribute to gout flare-ups. Berries contain vitamins and minerals such as manganese, magnesium zinc, calcium, iron and Vitamin C in high concentrations and these can work to lower the levels of uric acid. Cherries are a very common nutritional remedy for reduction of uric acid. Eating the cherries, or drinking their juice can be helpful. Other nutritional tips include consuming an abundance of citric fruits, tomatoes, leafy greens, and green peppers as these foods are high in bioflavonoid and Vitamin C and may help to reduce inflammation as well. Apple cider vinegar mixed with honey, taken twice a day can also help to alleviate the painful symptoms of gout.

Drinking a lot of water is another great way to keep inflammation at bay because water consumption flushes toxins and dilutes the levels of uric acid. Regular exercise of the joints, and of the entire body, is important to maintaining good health. It will help to nourish joints and strengthen muscles around the joints to support them better.  A person can utilize natural home remedies for gout to ease the painful symptoms, rather than turning to medications.
