pellet gun hunting

Hunting for rabbits with a pellet gun can be a great introduction to hunting for youngsters.  Pellet gun hunting is a great sport that helps build the responsibility that is necessary for firearm hunting.  The fact that using an air rifle to hunt with isn’t an easy prospect adds to the fun and challenge of it.  Teaching your kids to appreciate and enjoy hunting is a great way to build family bonds and also teach your kid values.  Of course, there is no requirement to ever graduate up to hunting with firearms as rabbit hunting is by no means an easy venture.

The first step is making sure you got the right gear.  A simple .22 air rifle works well and has its own mystique in that you are using compressed air to bring down prey instead of a firearm.  Rabbits usually make homes where there are a lot of briars and thorns in the underbrush, so a solid pair of canvas field pants is a requirement to keeping your legs from being turned to hamburger.  A similar coat is necessary due to some of the underbrush growing almost chest high.  A game bag for storing the kills is important too.

The best thing to do to flush out game is a style of hunting called “walk-‘em up.”  It is done by taking about ten very slow steps, then pausing for about thirty seconds.  Rabbits are very impatient and this sort of stalling will make them very nervous and have them running rather quickly.  There are a lot of different styles to it, but most often the time period spent waiting will send the rabbits running, thinking they have been spotted and are in danger.  You can also do this technique with a partner, trading off the walking and pausing, while the other observes for fleeing rabbits.  Rabbits are quick creatures, but they don’t prefer to go too far from home and this need will often make them easy targets to catch up with as they start to circle around back.

Having the right gear and the right rifle are a must for pellet gun hunting trip.  You want to come prepared with the knowledge and tools to help you bag a handful of the elusive creatures.  A successful day of hunting will leave you with a solid sense of satisfaction and doing it with the kids will help you build bonds as well as teach them to be responsible individuals.  Of course the hours outside will help them stay in shape and not stuck in front of the TV.
