Rare American Coins

Coin collecting has been around since coins were invented, but while initially it was only for their monetary value, today many collect coins for their numismatic value. Many coin collectors like to collect a whole series of a particular coin such as the Rare Mercury Dimes minted between 1916 and 1945. Some collectors will collect coins only from a particular country while others will collect only rare coins. These could be rare Ancient or old coins or bullion coins such as the rare American gold coins. This can include other rare American coins such as rare American cents, dimes, nickels or half dollars. Some people do it for hobby and then maybe display their collection in frames or containers, while others hope to gain something of it.  A sample list can give an idea of what to get if wanting to start a collection.

Rare Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles was made of gold from 1907 until 1933 and held a twenty dollar value.  Drawn on it are Lady Liberty holding onto an olive branch and a torch on one side, while on the other a bald eagle flying and a sun below it.  The design was made by Augustus St. Gaudens, which is why the name came to be what we know it as today.

Rare Mercury Dimes
This dime was worth ten cents and made of silver and copper. Reproduction started in 1916 and ended in1945.  It is also known as the Winged Liberty Head because of the goddess of Liberty with a Phrygian cap with wings that was depicted on it.

Rare Indian Head Cents
It was made from copper and nickel initially, but later copper, tin and zinc were used.  Production started in 1859 until 1909.  A one-cent worth and Lady Liberty wearing a Native American head dress.

Rare Lincoln Wheat Cents
From 1909 to 1958 it was produced and held the design of Lincoln on a side and two wheat stalks on the other.  Its worth today is not that much and therefore it is still found at times in circulation.

Rare Buffalo Head Nickels
This nickel is also known as the Indian Head because besides having the design of a buffalo on its reverse; it also has an Indian. Production went from 1913 to 1938.

Rare Walking Liberty Half Dollar
1892 until 1916 was when it was used and distributed.  It is also known as the Barber coin, since it is the name of who engraved the half dollar’s drawing of Liberty Head with the cap and reef, and the eagle on the flipside of it.

An american rare coin is a treasure both for its monetary and historical value.  To find or buy a rare american coin can be exciting and can make a great investment due to their tendency to appreciate in value.
