Tips for Beginning Freelance Writers

January 23, 2010

If you’re just starting out on the journey of a freelance writing career, or even just at the point where you’re kind of sticking the toe in the water, just to see, then there are many tips and pieces of advice that can definitely help you get started on the right track.  The most successful freelance writers have learned from years of not only building on success, but also from an enormous pile of failures.  While part of this learning curve is necessary and unavoidable, beginning freelancers or wannabe writers would be smart to steepen the learning curve by taking a look at the tips and advice given by writers who have been in the business for years.

Freelance writers don’t exist in a vacuum, and many established freelance writers, especially online, are more than happy to help out their fellow writers who are just starting out…because a lot of them were struggling not so long ago.  There are literally thousands, if not tens of thousands, of writing blogs out online.  If you’re looking for advice for beginners, make sure to find a blog by a writer who has been established for a while, and preferably a blog that has been around for a little bit of time, as well.  The first criteria should be obvious, because you want advice from freelance writers who have made it and know what they’re doing, not from people still trying to get there. An established blog is also a good sign that the writer is going to keep posting and giving out sage advice.

Aside from finding an online mentor, probably the biggest tips for beginning freelance writers is to be persistent to the point of stubbornness, to be driven to keep pushing even when you don’t see results, and not to give up.  The early months are very rough and very hard.  Once you can establish yourself and get a working resume of recent clips, freelance work does tend to have a snowball effect.
