Tow Truck Tales: Need Help From Tow Trucks?

December 9, 2009 – 6:32 am

Learning what you should know about tow trucks is a good idea for anyone who drives. Because you never know when you will need one. It’s almost always unexpected, and if you don’t have all the facts, then it could be a total nightmare. Everyone who is on the road today, should know the facts about used tow trucks for sale.

How many times have people gone into the store, came out and loaded up their groceries, and suddenly had no transportation. Because for some reason, the car wouldn’t start. They’re a thousand miles from home (seems like it anyway) and don’t know what to do, so they have to call a tow truck. This situation could occur from many different circumstances, like a fender bender, or a rollover, or your tire fell off while you sped down the road. Regardless, you’re now down to the tow truck option.

There was a time when you could call a tow truck with just a dime, and it would be there and tow you in. Very simple. But as with everything else in our time, it can never be that simple. First, you need to report the address and location, then your problem has to be clearly defined, and you have to have some kind of insurance information. It quickly turns from a simple act to a well drawn out process.

Laws and insurance, as usual, have turned a relatively simple operation into a full-out nearly impossible task. And instead of getting the help you need easily, it becomes complicated and difficult. Nowadays, instead of help being available as soon as possible, you may want to consider renting a car, or paying for a taxi to get to your destination while you wait for the tow truck to get your vehicle to where it can be made ready again for travel.

We all know that tow trucks are also known as ‘wreckers’. They are used to pull people out of the snow, or up from a hill they’ve run over, or just from an auction lot to lot to be stored. While they provide a lot of emergency services, towing isn’t all. Besides the ‘towing’ aspects, they can jump your car, or bring some gas if you’ve run out. Depending upon your situation, many of them are equipped with flairs should they be necessary.

There are a variety of different aspects to tow trucks that aren’t noticed at first by the naked eye. Most of them come equipped with a ‘boom’, which is a big plus when pulling a car out of a ditch. Then they have a ‘hook and chain’ option that enables them to pull the vehicle on it’s other axle.

The back of tow trucks are fitted with flatbeds. What’s meant by a ‘flatbed’, is that a whole bed can, with the use of hydraulics, pull a car up onto it’s bed with the aid of a winch. Sometimes these features are known as ‘rollbacks’ or ‘slides’. They’re one of the most used features of a tow truck.

There’s a lot to learn about what you should know about tow trucks once you start to realize how much is involved with them. It’s much more than just simply hauling a vehicle from one place to another. It’s much more complicated than you would imagine to pull a car up an embankment and load it onto a tow truck. But these powerful vehicles are more than up to the task, and worth their weight when you really need them.
